What is multimode fiber used for

Multimode fiber is typically used with LEDs or VCSELs as light sources, multimode transceivers, connectors, and networking equipment for short- to medium-distance data transmission.

Light Sources

Multimode fiber (MMF) uses low-cost light sources such as Light-Emitting Diodes (LEDs) and Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Lasers (VCSELs) to inject light into the fiber core.

LE

Ds are commonly used for older OM1 and OM2 fibers, while VCSELs are optimized for OM3, OM4, and OM5 fibers to support higher data rates and longer distances. TransceiversMMF requires multimode transceivers that match the fiber type and core size (typically 50/125 µm or 62. 5/125 µm).

These transceivers convert electrical signals into optical signals for transmission and then back into electrical signals at the receiving end. Common transceiver types include SFP, SFP+, QSFP+, and CFP modules, which support speeds from 1 Gbps up to 100 Gbps depending on the fiber type and distance.

Connectors and Cabling

Multimode fiber uses standard fiber optic connectors such as LC, SC, ST, and MTP/MPO connectors. These connectors ensure proper alignment of the fiber cores for efficient light transmission. The fiber cables themselves are classified into OM1, OM2, OM3, OM4, and OM5, with OM3–OM5 being laser-optimized for high-speed Ethernet applications.

Networking EquipmentMMF is commonly deployed in data centers, enterprise networks, and campus environments. It connects servers, switches, storage systems, and patch panels. Multimode fiber is ideal for short- to medium-distance links, typically up to 550 meters depending on the fiber type and data rate, making it cost-effective for intra-building or intra-campus connections.

Applications

Data Centers: High-speed connections for 10G, 25G, 40G, and 100G Ethernet links. Enterprise Networks: Backbone and horizontal cabling within buildings. Campus Networks: Linking multiple buildings or departments.

Specialized Uses: Fiber optic spectroscopy, laser welding, and other high-power optical applications. In summary, multimode fiber is used with LEDs or VCSELs, compatible multimode transceivers, standard fiber connectors, and networking hardware to provide high-speed, short- to medium-distance optical communication in a variety of professional environments.
