How to test splice attenuation in optical cables

Splice attenuation in optical fibers can be accurately measured using an OTDR or a power meter with a launch cable and temporary splice, ensuring proper cleaving and alignment. Using a Power Meter and Launch CablePrepare the Launch Cable: Attach a fiber pigtail to the light source to serve as a launch cable. This ensures stable light input into the fiber under test.

Create a Temporary Splice: Use a mechanical or fusion splice to connect the launch cable to the fiber under test. Ensure the splice is clean and properly cleaved for reliable measurements. Measure Output Power: Connect the other end of the fiber to a power meter using a bare fiber adapter.

Record the power before and after the splice to calculate the splice loss. Maintain Splice Quality: Renew index-matching gel if used, and replace the splice if contaminated or damaged. Using an Optical Time-Domain Reflectometer (OTDR)Connect the Launch Cable: Attach a launch cable to the OTDR with a mechanical or fusion splice to the fiber under test.

Perform the OTD

R Trace: Send light pulses into the fiber.

The OTD

R will display a trace showing reflections and backscatter along the fiber, including the splice location. Analyze Splice Loss: Identify the splice on the OTDR trace. Measure the loss between two markers around the splice using either the two-point method or the least-squares method to reduce noise effects.

Interpret Results: A higher dB value indicates greater attenuation. Compare the measured loss to acceptable standards for your fiber type and application.

Best Practices

Cleaving: Use a high-quality cleaver to ensure smooth fiber ends for fusion splicing. Calibration: Calibrate the power meter or OTDR before testing to minimize measurement uncertainty. Documentation: Record all measurements for quality assurance and network certification.

Environmental Considerations: Avoid contamination, tight bends, or mechanical stress on the fiber during testing. By following these methods, you can reliably measure splice attenuation, identify problematic splices, and ensure optimal performance of your fiber optic network.
