No fiber optic internet router

You don't need a fiber-specific router; a standard router can work with fiber internet when connected to an Optical Network Terminal (ONT). How Fiber Internet Works Without a ModemFiber-optic internet does not use a traditional modem. Instead, your ISP provides an Optical Network Terminal (ONT), which converts the fiber-optic light signals into Ethernet that a router can understand.

You simply connect your router's WAN port to the ONT to distribute internet to your devices.

Some IS

Ps offer a combo gateway (ONT + router), but using your own router can improve performance, coverage, and features like VPN, QoS, and advanced security.

Router Options

You can use a standard router with fiber internet, including Wi-Fi 6/6E/7 routers for high-speed wireless coverage. If you prefer, you can also use a non-Wi-Fi router, which allows you to place Wi-Fi access points separately for optimal coverage and flexibility. This setup is particularly useful in large homes or when you want to avoid Wi-Fi dead zones.

Setup Tips

Connect the router to the ONT via Ethernet. Enable bridge or ONT mode if using the ISP's combo gateway to prevent double NAT. Choose a router that matches your speed plan and supports the number of devices in your home.

Consider wired connections for high-demand devices and place Wi-Fi access points centrally if using separate APs.

Summary

Even without a fiber-specific router, you can fully utilize fiber internet by connecting a standard router to the ONT. For best performance, select a router that supports your speed plan, consider Wi-Fi standards like Wi-Fi 6/7, and optionally use non-Wi-Fi routers with separate access points for optimal coverage. This approach provides flexibility, better performance, and avoids ISP rental fees.
