How to use a tester for telecommunications fiber optic cables

Fiber optic testers are used to verify continuity, detect faults, and measure signal loss in fiber optic cables using visible light, power meters, or OTDR devices.

Types of Fiber Optic Testers

Visible Light Source / Visual Fault Locator (VFL) These devices inject visible red light into the fiber to check continuity and locate breaks, bends, or poor connections. They are ideal for quick troubleshooting and identifying faults in short cable runs ( ). Power Meter and Light Source (One-Jumper Method) This method measures signal attenuation or end-to-end loss.

A light source is connected to one end of the fiber, and a power meter measures the received light at the other end. This method is highly accurate for verifying network performance against industry standards like TIA/EIA ( ). Optical Time Domain Reflectometer (OTDR) OTDRs send pulses of light through the fiber and analyze backscatter and reflections to detect splices, connector losses, bends, or breaks.

They provide a graphical representation of the fiber's performance and are essential for long-distance or complex networks ( ).

Step-by-

Step Testing Procedure

Using a Visible Light SourceConnect the VFL or fiber optic flashlight to one end of the fiber (ensure the fiber is properly terminated). Observe the opposite end for visible red light. Do not look directly into the fiber as laser light can damage your eyes.

If no light is visible, a break or fault exists. The glowing red light often indicates the fault location. Document the results for each fiber segment ( ).

Using Power Meter and Light Source

Disconnect active equipment and calibrate the power meter and light source according to the manufacturer's instructions. Connect the light source to one end of the fiber and the power meter to the other. Measure the reference power level and compare it to TIA/EIA insertion loss limits.

Record the attenuation values and document the results for compliance and troubleshooting ( ). Using an OTDRConnect the OTDR to one end of the fiber.

Configure the OTD

R for the fiber type and expected length. Launch the test; the OTDR will send light pulses and measure reflections. Analyze the trace to identify splices, bends, or breaks, and document the findings ( ).

Best Practices

Clean all connectors and test cords before testing to avoid contamination and false readings. Inspect fiber endfaces with a microscope or fiber scope for dirt, scratches, or cracks before connecting. Label and document all test results to maintain baseline data for future troubleshooting and compliance ( ).

Follow safety precautions: never look directly into active fibers, and handle equipment according to manufacturer guidelines. By following these procedures and using the appropriate tester, you can ensure fiber optic cables are properly installed, functional, and meet performance standards, minimizing network downtime and maintenance issues.
