How to use a fiber optic end-face inspection instrument

Inspecting fiber endfaces ensures connectors are clean, undamaged, and meet quality standards, preventing signal loss and network issues.

Choosing the Right Instrument

Fiber end-face inspection instruments include handheld microscopes, benchtop microscopes, and automated inspection scopes. Handheld microscopes are suitable for field checks, while automated scopes provide consistent, repeatable results and can perform pass/fail assessments with detailed logs. Ensure the instrument is compatible with the type of fiber connector (UPC or APC) or bare fiber you are inspecting.

Preparing the Fiber

Select the correct probe tip for the connector type. For example, blue-banded tips are for UPC connectors, green-banded tips for APC connectors. Attach the probe tip securely by threading it onto the probe sleeve until finger-tight; no tools are required.

Insert the fiber ferrule into the probe tip carefully, avoiding contact with the fiber end.

Performing the Inspection

Activate the instrument and press the Auto Focus (AF) button to bring the fiber endface into clear view. Magnify the image if needed using the pause and zoom functions on the display. Examine the endface for contamination, scratches, pits, chips, or cracks, focusing on the core, cladding, ferrule, and adhesive zones.

The core is the most critical area, as defects here directly affect signal transmission.

Follow IE

C standards (IEC 61300-3-35) for evaluating each zone and determining pass/fail criteria. Cleaning and Re-InspectionIf contamination is detected, clean the fiber endface using approved tools such as fiber cleaner pens, wipes, or cassettes. Re-inspect after cleaning to confirm the endface is free of debris or damage.

For irreparable defects, re-cleave or replace the fiber to ensure optimal performance.

Best Practices

Always inspect before connecting fibers to prevent network issues. Avoid touching the fiber tip during inspection. Use proper adapters to match connector types.

For multi-fiber arrays, ensure the instrument can scan all fibers consistently. Maintain a clean workspace to minimize contamination during inspection. By following these steps, you can ensure that fiber connectors and bare fiber ends are properly inspected, maintaining signal integrity and network reliability.
