How to check the optical cable power using an optical power meter

Use an optical power meter to measure the light strength in a fiber by connecting the cable, setting the correct wavelength, and reading the power in dBm.

Step-by-

Step Procedure1. Prepare the Optical Power Meter (OPM)Turn on the meter and allow it to warm up for a minute or two to stabilize readings. Ensure the batteries are charged or use an AC adapter if available.

Set the meter to the correct wavelength that matches your light source (commonly 850 nm, 1310 nm, or 1550 nm depending on fiber type),. 2.

Clean Connectors and Adapters

Use lint-free wipes or click-to-clean tools with fiber cleaning alcohol to clean all fiber connectors and mating adapters. Connector cleanliness is critical, as dust or oil can cause significant measurement errors. 3.

Connect the Fiber

For measuring source power: attach a reference patchcord from the source to the power meter. For measuring power at the far end of an installed link: disconnect the cable from the receiver and connect it to the power meter. Ensure the connector types match (SC, LC, FC, etc.) and insert gently until secure.

4.

Take the Measurement

The meter will display the optical power in dBm (decibels relative to 1 milliwatt),. A higher dBm value indicates stronger light; negative values indicate weaker signals. For example, -10 dBm is generally acceptable, while -25 dBm may indicate a problem.

If measuring loss, first establish a reference by connecting the test cord directly from the light source to the meter and setting it to 0 dB, then insert the fiber link to measure total loss. 5.

Interpret the Results

Compare the measured power against expected values or link budget calculations. Low readings may indicate dirty connectors, damaged fiber, or poor splices. Test from both directions if possible, as connector geometry can affect readings.

6.

Maintain Accuracy

Regularly calibrate your optical power meter to ensure reliable measurements. Always clean connectors before testing and avoid bending or stressing the fiber during measurement. By following these steps, you can accurately measure the optical power in a fiber optic cable, identify potential issues, and verify network performance.
