How to straighten an optical cable without a steel wire

You can safely straighten an optical cable by using hot or boiling water to relax the cable's natural curvature, avoiding any metal tools that could damage the fibers.

Using Hot Water

One effective method is to submerge the cable in hot water (60–80°C) for a few minutes. Make sure to avoid immersing the connectors or ends to prevent water damage. Hold the cable in the water for 3–4 minutes, gently pressing it down with a spoon if needed.

After removing it, wipe it dry and smooth it out with your fingers while the insulation is still soft, which helps remove kinks and bends without stressing the fibers.

Using Boiling Water and Tubes

For more stubborn curvature, you can use boiling water combined with a rigid guide, such as an aluminum tube. Slide the cable through the tube and pour boiling water over it. The heat softens the cable's outer layer, allowing it to straighten naturally as it passes through the tube.

Once cooled, the cable retains a straighter shape.

Gentle Manual Straightening

If you prefer not to use water, you can also manually straighten the cable by holding both ends and gently stretching it along a flat surface. Avoid sharp bends or excessive force, as optical fibers are fragile. Rolling the cable loosely in the opposite direction of its natural curl can also help reduce kinks over time.

Tips for Preventing Future Kinks

Store cables loosely coiled rather than tightly wound. Avoid sharp bends near connectors. Use cable organizers or soft ties to maintain gentle curves.

By combining these methods, you can safely straighten optical cables without using steel wires, preserving both the cable's performance and longevity.
