Fiber optic connector color classification

Fiber optic connector color codes visually identify fiber types, connector polish types, and individual fibers according to TIA-598 standards.

Connector Color Coding

Fiber optic connectors use color-coded bodies or boots to indicate both the fiber type and the polish type: Single-mode UPC (Ultra Physical Contact): Blue connectors; flat polish, no angle, reflect light back toward the source.

Single-mode AP

C (Angled Physical Contact): Green connectors; 8-degree angled polish to reduce back reflection, must not be mixed with UPC. Multimode OM1/OM2: Beige or black connectors; typically 62. 5/125 µm (OM1) or 50/125 µm (OM2) cores.

Multimode OM3: Aqua connectors; laser-optimized for high-speed networks. Multimode OM4: Aqua or sometimes Erika Violet; supports longer distances and higher bandwidth. Multimode OM5: Lime green; designed for SWDM applications.

Fiber Jacket and Buffer Tube Colors

The outer jacket and buffer tube colors follow the TIA/EIA-598C standard to identify fiber type and count: Single-mode fibers: Yellow jacket. Multimode fibers: Orange (OM1/OM2), Aqua (OM3/OM4), Lime (OM5). Outdoor cables: Usually black for UV resistance, with printed legends for fiber type.

Individual Fiber Color Sequence

For multi-fiber cables, each fiber is color-coded to simplify identification: BlueOrangeGreenBrownSlate (Gray)WhiteRedBlackYellowVioletRose (Pink)Aqua For cables with more than 12 fibers, the sequence repeats with stripes or markings to maintain unique identification. Some high-density or European standards extend the sequence to 16 fibers with additional colors: Olive, Magenta, Tan, and Lime.

Practical Benefits

Error reduction: Prevents mis-splicing and cross-connections in high-density cables. Operational safety: Quickly distinguishes fiber types and connectors, reducing installation mistakes. Global consistency: Standardized colors allow technicians worldwide to interpret cables correctly.

Maintenance efficiency: Simplifies tracing, splicing, and troubleshooting in complex networks. Using the correct fiber optic color code ensures network reliability, faster installation, and reduced downtime, especially in modern data centers with multi-core and ribbon fiber systems.
