National Standard for Indoor Armored Optical Cables

The ICEA S-83-596-2016 standard governs the materials, construction, performance, and testing of indoor optical fiber cables, including armored variants, for use within buildings.

Scope and Purpose

The ICE

A S-83-596-2016 standard specifies requirements for fiber optic communications cables intended for installation inside buildings. It covers materials, construction, performance criteria, and test procedures for indoor cables, including armored types designed to resist mechanical damage while maintaining signal integrity. These cables are typically used to transmit voice, video, and data signals within commercial or residential buildings, either in exposed areas (surface-mounted) or concealed areas (inside walls, ceilings, or attics),.

Armored Cable Construction

Indoor armored optical cables generally feature a core optical fiber cable protected by a spirally-wrapped, interlocked aluminum armor for crush resistance and durability. The armor is often enclosed within PVC inner and outer jackets, providing both mechanical protection and compliance with fire safety standards for indoor use. Armored cables may be factory-terminated with LC, SC, or ST connectors and can include a pull sheath to facilitate installation.

Performance and Testing

The standard defines mechanical, optical, and environmental performance requirements, including tensile strength, crush resistance, bend radius, and attenuation limits. Factory-terminated armored cables are fully tested and accompanied by certification reports to ensure compliance with the standard. Hybrid cables containing both optical fibers and metallic conductors must meet additional metallic conductor requirements as defined by other ICEA standards, such as ICEA S-120-742 for power-limited circuits.

Installation Considerations

Indoor armored cables can be installed in exposed or concealed locations, with or without additional conduit protection, depending on the building environment and cable type. Proper bonding and grounding of conductive components is recommended in accordance with the National Electrical Code (NEC) and industry best practices to ensure safety and system reliability.
