Temperature Measurement of Busbar Connectors in Armenia

Busbar connector temperatures can be effectively monitored using infrared sensors, fiber optic systems, and thermal modeling to ensure safe operation and predictive maintenance.

Methods for Temperature Measurement

Infrared (IR) Sensors: Low-cost IR sensors, such as PyroMiniBus, are commonly used for monitoring busbar joints inside switchgear cabinets. These sensors measure surface temperatures from -20°C to 1000°C and are ideal for areas with limited space. To improve accuracy, the busbar surface should be painted or coated to reduce reflectivity.

The sensors are mounted at a safe distance to avoid electrical hazards and can use different optics depending on busbar width and voltage level. Fiber Optic Temperature Sensors: For bus ducts or busbars routed through ceilings, high places, or under floors, fiber optic sensors like DTSX provide continuous monitoring over long distances. These sensors are immune to electromagnetic interference, allowing accurate detection of abnormal overheating even in complex layouts.

They enable predictive maintenance by pinpointing hotspots and allowing timely corrective actions, such as tightening bolted connections. Thermal Cameras and Thermo Labels: While thermal cameras can be used for visual inspection, their effectiveness is limited in large or enclosed busbar systems. Thermo labels can provide localized temperature monitoring but are less suitable for continuous or long-distance monitoring.

Thermal Modeling and Analysis

Mathematical and simulation models are used to predict temperature distribution along busbars under different current loads, cross-sections, and contact resistances. These models help in evaluating design performance, anticipating maintenance needs, and optimizing cooling strategies. For high-current applications, forced convection or water cooling may be applied to maintain safe operating temperatures.

Software tools like Quich Field and Opera 2D can simulate both stationary and transient thermal behavior, including the effects of harmonic currents and joint resistances.

Practical Considerations

Joint Monitoring: Bolted or clamped connections are prone to loosening, which increases resistance and local heating. Continuous temperature monitoring at these points is critical. Environmental Factors: Ambient temperature, airflow, and enclosure design affect heat dissipation and must be considered in sensor placement and thermal modeling.

Predictive Maintenance: Early detection of temperature rise allows preventive actions, reducing the risk of operational shutdowns or equipment damage. In Armenia, industrial facilities using copper busbar systems can implement a combination of IR sensors for localized monitoring and fiber optic systems for long-distance or complex busbar layouts, supported by thermal modeling to ensure reliable and safe operation under high electrical loads.
