Temperature-sensing optical cable stripping tool

A temperature-sensing optical fiber stripper removes coatings from fibers by applying controlled heat, allowing safe and precise preparation for splicing or testing.

Overview

A thermal fiber stripper uses heat to soften or melt the polymer coating on optical fibers, enabling easy removal without nicking or breaking the glass core. These tools are suitable for single fibers, ribbon fibers, and various coating diameters (e.g., 250 µm, 400 µm, 900 µm) and often feature adjustable temperature and timing settings to accommodate different fiber types and coatings.

Step-by-

Step Usage

Charge and Power OnEnsure the tool's lithium-ion battery is fully charged before use. Most models indicate full charge via an LED. Press the power button to turn on the device and select the desired temperature level (commonly 60°C, 80°C, 100°C, or 120°C) depending on the fiber coating.

Prepare the Fiber

Cut the fiber to the required length using a fiber cutter. Insert the fiber into a fiber holder or clamp if available. This ensures repeatable handling and prevents accidental bending or breakage.

Set Temperature and Time

Adjust the temperature and heating duration according to the fiber type. For standard 250 µm or 900 µm fibers, a few seconds of heating is usually sufficient. Some tools provide audible beeps or indicator lights to signal when the fiber is ready for stripping.

Strip the Coating

Close the clamp or heating pad gently over the fiber. Apply light pressure while the heating element softens the coating. After the heating cycle, pull the fiber out smoothly to remove the coating without damaging the glass core.

Inspect the Fiber

Check the stripped section for clean, undamaged glass. If necessary, repeat the process with slightly adjusted temperature or time settings for stubborn coatings.

Safety Precautions

The tool becomes hot during operation; avoid direct contact with the heating element. Do not expose the lithium-ion battery to fire or water, and handle it carefully to prevent injury. Allow the tool to auto-shutdown after inactivity to prevent overheating.

Tips for Best Results

Use fiber holders to maintain consistent positioning and reduce the risk of fiber breakage. Start with the lowest effective temperature and increase gradually if the coating does not strip cleanly. For ribbon fibers, ensure the tool is compatible with multi-fiber stripping and adjust settings accordingly.

Clean the stripped fiber with an ultrasonic cleaner or lint-free wipe before splicing. By following these steps, a temperature-sensing optical fiber stripper can efficiently and safely remove coatings, preparing fibers for high-quality splicing or testing while minimizing the risk of damage.
