Proper cable tray and trunking installation ensures safe, organized, and maintainable electrical wiring systems.

Planning and Preparation

Before installation, plan the route of the cable trays and trunking according to approved shop drawings, considering clearance, load capacity, and cable separation requirements. Inspect the site to ensure areas are accessible, safe, and ready for permanent installation. Materials should be delivered in advance, stored above ground, and protected from moisture, sunlight, and construction debris.

Verify that all materials are approved by the consultant and match the project specifications.

Material Handling and Equipment

Use appropriate lifting equipment such as forklifts or cranes for heavy trays, ladders, and trunking, following a safety lifting plan. Essential tools include cutting machines, drilling machines, screwdrivers, spanners, grinders, and measuring tapes. Ensure scaffolding or working platforms are in place for elevated installations.

Installation Procedure

Mounting Supports: Install brackets or supports at regular intervals (typically 1. 5–3 meters depending on tray type and load) to prevent sagging. Maintain a minimum 40mm gap between the tray and structural elements.

Tray and Trunking Placement: Align trays and trunking straight and level. Use connectors and fittings to join sections securely. Ladder-type trays allow airflow and easy cable entry, while perforated or solid-bottom trays are suitable for lighter loads or specific environments.

Cable Fixing: Secure cables using tie wraps for smaller cables or cleats/metal straps for larger or bunched cables (>25 sq mm) to prevent movement and maintain neatness. Offsets and Adjustments: Adjust tray runs or sizes as needed to accommodate structural conditions while maintaining free area for cable routing. Inspection and QA/QC: Supervisors and QA/QC inspectors should verify that installation follows approved drawings, manufacturer recommendations, and safety standards.

Record inspections and issue Work Inspection Requests (WIR) for consultant approval.

Safety Considerations

All personnel must attend safety induction and follow project-specific health and safety plans. Handle materials carefully to avoid injury or damage, and do not proceed if unsafe conditions are present. Follow manufacturer guidelines for handling and installation.

Post-InstallationAfter installation, instruct the consultant and site manager on the system operation and ensure all documentation, including inspection records, is completed. Maintain clear access for future maintenance and ensure the installation is neat and workmanlike. By following these steps, cable tray and trunking systems can be installed efficiently, safely, and in compliance with project specifications, ensuring long-term reliability and ease of maintenance.
