Optocoupler Package Construction

An optocoupler package houses an infrared LED and a photodetector within a sealed, electrically insulating enclosure, providing optical signal transfer while maintaining electrical isolation.

Core Components

An optocoupler consists of two main elements: the light emitter and the photodetector. The input side contains an infrared LED, typically made from gallium arsenide (GaAs), which emits light in the 850–950 nm wavelength range when forward biased. The output side contains a photodetector, such as a phototransistor, photodiode, or photothyristor, which converts the incoming light back into an electrical signal.

Isolation Barrier

Between the LED and the photodetector lies a transparent, electrically insulating barrier. This barrier ensures galvanic isolation, preventing high voltages or noise from the input side from affecting the output side. The barrier is often formed using a clear epoxy or plastic dome that also acts as the optical medium for light transmission.

Package Types and Construction

Optocouplers are typically encapsulated in hermetic or opaque plastic packages to prevent external light interference. Common formats include 4-pin or 6-pin dual in-line packages (DIP), surface-mount packages, and small-outline packages. Inside the package, the LED and photodetector are mounted on adjacent arms of a lead frame, which is a stamped metal structure providing mechanical support and electrical connections.

The lead frame branches are designed to maintain isolation and allow soldering to external circuits. Some advanced designs, like the co-planar or double-molded side-by-side structure, use a copper-alloy frame with a clear epoxy dome to enhance mechanical robustness and achieve high voltage isolation ratings, sometimes up to 5 kV. Operation within the PackageWhen current flows through the LED, it emits infrared light that travels through the optical medium and strikes the photodetector.

The photodetector then generates a proportional electrical signal. The current-transfer ratio (CTR), defined as the ratio of the photodetector current to the LED current, is a key parameter influenced by the package construction and optical alignment.

Summary

The optocoupler package construction ensures reliable optical coupling while maintaining electrical isolation. Key design elements include the IR LED, photodetector, insulating optical barrier, lead frame, and encapsulating material. Variations in package design allow adaptation to different voltage, size, and mechanical requirements, making optocouplers versatile for both digital and analog isolation applications.
