Sealing of Civil Defense Cable Trays Penetrating Walls

Civil defense cable trays penetrating walls should be sealed using fire-rated, water- and gas-tight modular systems to ensure safety, compliance, and maintainability.

Firestop and Penetration Sealing

Cable tray penetrations through walls or slabs must be sealed with firestopping materials to prevent fire spread and maintain structural integrity. Openings should be tightly sealed without visible cracks or voids, using materials such as fire-rated boards, firestop packs, firestop mastic, or mineral wool. For large openings, a fire-resistant backing plate is recommended before sealing.

Gaps between firestop packs and cables should not exceed 1 cm², and packing thickness should be at least 24 cm. Cover plates should be square, consistent, and painted evenly to close the opening effectively.

Modular Sealing Systems

Modern solutions like NOFIRNO®, SLIPSIL, and Roxtec systems provide modular, flexible sealing for cable trays and conduits. These systems are designed to: Seal single or multiple cables through the same penetration. Provide fire, water, and gas protection.

Allow easy maintenance and cable changes without dismantling the entire seal. Be installed in walls, floors, or slabs, either before or after cable installation. These systems often use expanding rubber inserts, silicone-based sealants, or water-resistant pads to create a tight seal.

They are suitable for hazardous, wet, or outdoor environments and comply with international standards for fire and integrity protection.

Installation Best Practices

Prepare the opening: Ensure wall or slab finishes are complete and shaft doors installed. Install backing plates for large openings if required. Position cable trays and route cables according to design.

Apply firestop packs or modular inserts in an orderly sequence. Seal all gaps inside and around metal trunking completely. Verify tightness: Ensure no visible cracks or voids remain.

Maintain accessibility: Modular systems allow future cable additions or maintenance without compromising the seal.

Additional Considerations

Use non-toxic, halogen-free materials to comply with safety and environmental standards.

Ensure NEM

A or equivalent classification for outdoor or wet environments. For civil defense or critical infrastructure, select systems tested for EI 120 fire rating or higher to meet regulatory requirements. By following these guidelines and using certified modular sealing systems, civil defense cable trays can be safely and effectively sealed through walls, ensuring fire safety, water and gas tightness, and long-term maintainability.
