Standard type of fiber optic pigtail

Fiber optic pigtails are short optical fibers with a factory-terminated connector on one end and a bare fiber on the other, available in single-mode and multimode types with various connector, polish, and buffer options for structured network applications.

Overview

A fiber optic pigtail is a short cable assembly designed to bridge the gap between field-deployed fiber cables and network equipment. One end has a factory-polished connector, while the other end is bare fiber prepared for fusion or mechanical splicing. Unlike patch cords, which have connectors on both ends, pigtails are intended for permanent, low-loss terminations inside splice trays, fiber distribution boxes, or optical distribution frames (ODFs) in FTTH, ODN, or data center networks.

Fiber TypesSingle-mode (OS2, 9/125 µm): Standard for FTTH, telecom, and long-distance applications. Provides low attenuation and high bandwidth over long distances. Multimode (OM3/OM4, 50/125 µm): Used for in-building networks, data centers, and short-distance applications.

Supports high-speed data transmission over shorter distances.

Connector Types

Common connector types include: LC/UPC: Standard in data centers and high-density applications. SC/APC: Widely used in FTTH and PON networks for low back reflection.

F

C, ST, E2000, SN, CS, MDC: Available for specialized applications. Polish TypesUPC (Ultra Physical Contact): Low insertion loss, moderate return loss.

AP

C (Angled Physical Contact): Minimizes back reflection, ideal for PON and FTTH systems. Buffer and Cable SpecificationsTight-buffered fibers: 0. 9 mm, 2.

0 mm, or 3. 0 mm outer diameters, providing mechanical protection and compatibility with splice trays and closures. Cable jackets: PVC, LSZH, armored, or outdoor-rated for environmental protection.

Simplex or multifiber: Single or multiple fibers in a ribbon or bunch configuration, color-coded for easy identification. ApplicationsFTTH / PON networks: Connect splitter outputs to subscriber drop cables. Fiber distribution boxes (FDB): Convert multi-core feeder cables into individual subscriber ports.

Splice closures (FOSC): Transition loose-tube trunk cables into connectorized sub-systems. Data centers: High-density patching and structured cabling.

Installation Considerations

Fusion splicing is preferred for low-loss, permanent connections; mechanical splicing is an alternative for temporary or emergency setups. Cleaning, cleaving, and inspecting the bare fiber end is critical to minimize insertion loss and back reflection. Matching buffer diameter and connector type to the splice tray and closure ensures proper fit and mechanical protection.

AdvantagesFactory-polished connectors provide consistent geometry, low insertion loss, and high return loss. Reduces field termination errors and installation time. Supports scalable, modular network expansion with minimal rework.

Fiber optic pigtails are therefore a key component in structured fiber networks, offering reliable, high-performance terminations that bridge the factory-polished connector world with field-installed fiber infrastructure.
