Optical Module Electrical Interface Standard

Optical module electrical interfaces are standardized through MSAs and OIF CEI specifications to ensure interoperability, high-speed signaling, and compatibility across different vendors.

Overview

Optical modules, such as SFP, SFP+, QSFP, and CFP, are hot-pluggable transceivers that convert electrical signals from a host system into optical signals for fiber links and vice versa. The electrical interface connects the module to the host system and is critical for signal integrity, speed, and interoperability. These interfaces are defined by Multi-Source Agreements (MSAs) and standards from organizations like the Optical Internetworking Forum (OIF) and IEEE 802.

3. Key StandardsMSA (Multi-Source Agreement): MSAs are industry agreements among multiple manufacturers to standardize module dimensions, pinouts, and electrical interfaces. Examples include SFP MSA, QSFP MSA, and CFP MSA.

MS

As ensure modules from different vendors are physically and electrically compatible, though detailed datasheet verification is still required for line rate and optical compatibility.

OIF CE

I (Common Electrical Interface): CEI defines high-speed electrical interfaces for optical modules, including retimed digital and analog connections.

CE

I standards, such as CEI-112G-LR and CEI-112G-LINEAR-PAM4, support multi-lane high-speed signaling for 100G and beyond.

CE

I specifies voltage levels, signal integrity requirements, and lane configurations for SerDes-based host interfaces.

IEE

E 802. 3 Ethernet Standards: IEEE defines electrical and optical specifications for Ethernet-compatible modules, ensuring interoperability in Ethernet networks. These standards often complement MSA and OIF specifications.

Interface Types

Analog NR

Z: Early optical modules used analog non-return-to-zero (NRZ) electrical interfaces, directly driving lasers or LEDs without retiming. Retimed Digital: Modern modules use retimed digital interfaces, where the module regenerates the signal to improve signal integrity at high speeds. Analog Coherent Optics (ACO): For coherent optics, the CFP2-ACO standard places the DSP on the host board while the module handles analog optical components, reducing module power consumption.

Practical ExamplesSFP/SFP+/SFP28: Electrical interfaces are defined by the SFP MSA, supporting 1–25 Gbps per lane. Pinouts, voltage levels, and control signals are standardized for interoperability. QSFP/QSFP-DD/OSFP: Multi-lane modules for 100G and 400G applications use CEI-compliant electrical interfaces with PAM4 signaling and DSP-based SerDes for high-speed data transmission.

LPO MS

A 100G-DR: Defines 53. 125 GBd PAM4 optical interfaces and host-module electrical interfaces for DSP-based SerDes, supporting Ethernet-like links with low power and high density.

Summary

The electrical interface standard of optical modules ensures that modules from different vendors can interoperate reliably at high speeds.

MS

As define mechanical and electrical compatibility, OIF CEI standards define high-speed signaling requirements, and IEEE standards ensure Ethernet interoperability. Modern interfaces support retimed digital, analog, and coherent optics configurations, enabling scalable, high-performance optical networks.

Understanding the OSFP Standard: The Open 400G/800G Optical

What Is the OSFP Standard? OSFP (Octal Small Form Factor Pluggable) is a pluggable optical transceiver interface standard that supports eight electrical lanes (Tx/Rx) per module.

LPO MSA Specification

It builds on IEEE 802.3 and OIF CEI-112G-LINEAR-PAM4 specifications. It enables Ethernet-like links with 1, 2, 4, or 8 lanes for data centers, using low power, high port density, low cost, and low latency
