The Role of Relay Protection in Wind Farms

Relay protection in wind farms ensures safe operation of wind turbine generators, collector systems, and substations by detecting faults and coordinating trips to prevent equipment damage and maintain system reliability.

Key Components of Wind Farm Protection

Wind Turbine Generators (WTGs): Modern wind farms consist of numerous WTGs, often ranging from 1. 5 MW to 3 MW each, connected via a collector system to a substation.

WT

Gs may be fixed-speed or variable-speed with partial or full power electronic conversion, which affects fault current contribution and relay settings. Collector System: The collector system, typically radial, consists of underground cables or overhead lines that transport power from WTGs to the collector substation. Multiple collector feeders may exist to improve reliability.

Protection must cover both the entire feeder and individual WTGs. Substations and Transformers: Collector substations step up voltage to transmission levels. Protection includes generator step-up (GSU) transformers, main substation transformers, buses, reactors, and tie lines.

Common Relay Protection Schemes

Overcurrent Protection: 51/50 (Time/Instantaneous Overcurrent): Protects collector feeders and WTGs. Pickup currents are set above normal load but below fault levels to avoid misoperation from inrush currents. 67 (Directional Overcurrent): Provides directional supervision for phase and ground faults.

Settings must consider low positive sequence fault currents and variable wind generation output. Coordination with Fuses: Relay settings are coordinated with WTG GSU transformer expulsion fuses to ensure selective tripping and avoid unnecessary outages. Negative Sequence Protection: Used as backup to detect unbalanced faults, especially when WTGs contribute little negative sequence current.

Ground Fault Protection: Ground time and instantaneous overcurrent relays (51G/50G or 67GT/67GI) protect against earth faults. Directional supervision may be required depending on system grounding and transformer connections.

Design Considerations

Fault Current Contribution: Wind farms often have low fault current contributions due to inverter-based WTGs, affecting relay sensitivity and coordination. Variable Source Strength: Wind variability can change generator output, requiring careful selection of directional and overcurrent relay settings. Collector Feeder Protection: Relays must protect the entire feeder while providing backup for individual WTGs.

Settings may be below combined WTG output to ensure sensitivity. Coordination with System Protection: Relays must coordinate with upstream transmission protection and other WEP protective devices to maintain overall system reliability.

Summary

Basic relay protection for wind farms involves a combination of overcurrent, directional, and ground fault relays coordinated with WTG fuses and substation equipment. Engineers must account for low fault currents, variable generation, and radial collector systems to ensure selective and reliable protection. Proper design enhances safety, equipment longevity, and grid stability while accommodating the unique characteristics of wind electric plants.
