Configuring the serial cable of the core switch

To configure a core switch via serial console, connect the switch console port to your PC using an RS-232 or RJ-45 console cable, launch a terminal emulator, and set the correct COM port and baud rate.

Hardware Connection

Identify the console port on the switch, usually labeled as CONSOLE or RS-232/RJ-45 on the front or back panel. Connect the console cable: For RJ-45 to serial: Use an RS232-RJ45 cable or a USB-RS232 adapter if your PC lacks a serial port.

For US

B console ports (common on Cisco Catalyst 9300): Connect a USB cable from the PC to the switch. Some switches require installing a USB driver (e.g., Silicon Labs CP2102N) to create a virtual COM port. Power on the switch.

Ensure all power LEDs are steady green to confirm the device is operational.

Terminal Emulator Setup

Launch a terminal emulator program such as PuTTY, Tera Term, HyperTerminal, or SecureCRT.

Select the CO

M port corresponding to your serial or USB connection. Configure the serial settings: Baud rate: 115200Data bits: 8Parity: NoneStop bits: 1Flow control: None (disable hardware/software flow control) to ensure proper communication. Press Enter to view the switch bootloader or login prompt.

Initial Configuration

If the switch is new, it may have factory default settings with no admin password. Define a manager/admin password to secure access. You can now perform initial configuration via the CLI, including setting IP addresses, VLANs, and other management parameters.

Troubleshooting Tips

If no output appears: Verify the console cable and adapter are functional.

Confirm the CO

M port selection in the terminal emulator. Ensure the baud rate is set to 115200. Try power cycling the switch or using a different PC.

For US

B console connections, ensure the correct driver is installed and avoid generic USB serial drivers on Mac-based PCs. By following these steps, you can establish a stable serial console connection to your core switch, enabling full CLI access for configuration and management.
