Principle of Laser Diode

A laser diode operates on the principle of stimulated emission in a forward-biased semiconductor p-n junction, producing coherent, monochromatic, and directional light.

Working Mechanism

A laser diode is a semiconductor device similar to a light-emitting diode (LED), but it generates coherent light through stimulated emission rather than spontaneous emission. It consists of a p-n junction made from direct bandgap semiconductor materials such as gallium arsenide (GaAs) or indium gallium arsenide (InGaAs),. When a forward voltage is applied, electrons from the n-type region gain energy and recombine with holes in the p-type region, releasing energy in the form of photons.

Stimulated Emission and Population Inversion

The key principle is stimulated emission: an incoming photon can trigger an excited electron to drop to a lower energy state, emitting a photon with the same phase, frequency, and direction as the incident photon. To achieve this, the diode must reach population inversion, where more electrons occupy the excited state than the ground state. This ensures that photon emission is amplified rather than absorbed.

Optical Cavity and Light Amplification

The laser diode includes mirrors at both ends of the active region, forming a resonant optical cavity. One mirror is fully reflective, and the other is partially reflective, allowing some light to exit as a laser beam. Photons bounce back and forth between the mirrors, stimulating further emissions and amplifying the light.

Only photons of a specific wavelength and phase are amplified, producing a highly directional, monochromatic, and coherent beam.

Active Region and Material Choice

The active region is a thin layer within the p-n junction where electron-hole recombination occurs. The choice of semiconductor material determines the wavelength of the emitted light, which can range from infrared to ultraviolet. Materials with a direct bandgap are essential because they efficiently convert electrical energy into light, unlike indirect bandgap materials such as silicon.

Summary

In essence, a laser diode converts electrical energy into coherent light by combining electroluminescence, stimulated emission, and optical feedback within a semiconductor structure. This principle enables applications in fiber-optic communication, laser pointers, CD/DVD reading, medical devices, and high-precision instrumentation.
