Where to plug in the server optical module

Optical modules are plugged into the network adapter (NIC) installed in the server, not directly into the server chassis.

Understanding the Connection

Servers typically do not have built-in ports for optical modules. To use fiber connections, you need a network adapter (NIC) that supports optical modules such as SFP, SFP+, or QSFP. The optical module is inserted into the NIC, which is then installed in a PCIe slot on the server motherboard, enabling fiber connectivity to switches or other network devices (ModuleTek).

Installation Steps

Select a compatible optical module based on the NIC manufacturer (Intel, Broadcom, Mellanox, QLogic, etc.) and the required speed or distance. Remove the dust plug from the optical module and the NIC port. Insert the optical module into the NIC port carefully, ensuring it is fully seated without forcing it.

Connect the fiber optic cable to the optical module, maintaining proper bend radius (at least 4 cm) and avoiding contact with power or signal cables. Label the cables for easy identification and maintenance.

Safety and Handling

Use anti-static precautions such as wrist straps or mats to prevent ESD damage. Avoid excessive pressure when inserting the module to prevent damage to the NIC port or module. Ensure the module is compatible with the NIC to prevent link failures or performance degradation.

Summary

To connect a server to a fiber network, insert the optical module into the NIC installed in the server, then connect the fiber cable to the module. Proper handling, compatibility checks, and cable management are essential for reliable operation and longevity of both the module and server network interface.
