Tools for laying optical cables in underground wells

Efficient underground fiber optic cable installation relies on trenchless tools, directional drilling rigs, cable ploughs, and specialized cable-pulling equipment.

Trenchless and Piercing Tools

Ground piercing tools and UCG piercing tools (also called "missiles") allow fiber optic cables to be installed underground without extensive excavation, minimizing surface disruption in urban or landscaped areas. These tools are ideal for short to medium distances, with smaller missiles suitable for 10–15 feet and larger ones for 30–50 feet, depending on soil density. They require air compressors to operate efficiently and are particularly useful under driveways, sidewalks, or other obstacles.

Cable Ploughs and Laying Machines

Cable plough systems are designed for trenchless installation over longer distances. Machines like those from FOECK can lay multiple cables simultaneously, including fiber optics, warning tapes, and earthing wires. They offer high pulling power (up to 180 tonnes) and can operate at depths up to 2.

5 meters. Hydraulically adjustable outriggers allow adaptation to various terrains while minimizing environmental impact.

Trenching and Conduit Installation

For projects where trenching is feasible, ride-on trenchers and skid steer loaders with trenching attachments are commonly used. Ride-on trenchers are efficient for open lands, while skid steers are suitable for confined urban spaces. Trenches provide a protected pathway for fiber optic cables and conduits, ensuring long-term network reliability.

Directional Drilling and Horizontal Drilling

Directional boring tools (DBT) and horizontal directional drilling (HDD) rigs are essential for installing cables under roads, obstacles, or in complex urban environments.

DB

Ts are smaller rigs for shallow arcs, while HDD rigs can drill long lengths at various depths and soil conditions, allowing precise cable placement with minimal surface disruption.

Cable-

Pulling Equipment

Once conduits or trenches are prepared, cable-pulling tools are used to move fiber optic cables safely. These include: Pulling grips: Reduce snags and facilitate smooth cable movement through tight spaces. Support grips: Distribute cable weight evenly along vertical or sloped runs to prevent damage.

Strain-relief devices: Protect cables from excessive tension during installation.

Best Practices

Route planning: Define clear cable paths and access points to avoid tight bends and future conflicts. Bend radius and tension control: Ensure cables are not stressed beyond manufacturer specifications. Site surveys: Assess soil conditions, terrain, and existing utilities before installation.

Permits and approvals: Obtain necessary rights-of-way and regulatory approvals to prevent delays. By combining trenchless tools, plough systems, directional drilling, and proper cable-pulling equipment, fiber optic cables can be installed efficiently, safely, and with minimal disruption to the surrounding environment.
