Laser Diode PDLD Structure

A PDLD structure integrates a laser diode and a photodiode in a single semiconductor device, allowing simultaneous light emission and monitoring of optical output.

Overview of PDLDA PDL

D (Photodiode-Laser Diode) structure combines a laser diode (LD) and a photodiode (PD) on the same chip or in a closely coupled package. The laser diode generates coherent light through stimulated emission at a forward-biased p–n junction, while the photodiode monitors a portion of the emitted light to provide feedback for power stabilization or modulation control.

Laser Diode Structure

The laser diode in a PDLD typically consists of: Active Region: A forward-biased, heavily doped p–n junction or quantum well that serves as the optical gain medium. Optical Confinement Layers: Surrounding layers with lower refractive index to confine photons vertically and laterally, ensuring efficient lasing. Electrical Contacts: Metal contacts on the p- and n-sides to inject current and control the lasing process.

Resonant Cavity: Formed by cleaved or coated facets of the semiconductor to provide optical feedback for coherent light generation.

Photodiode Integration

The photodiode is positioned to capture a fraction of the laser's output, often through: Epitaxial Layer Sharing: The PD may share part of the laser's semiconductor layers, typically a PIN structure, to detect light efficiently. Optical Tap or Reflection: A small portion of the emitted beam is directed onto the photodiode, either via a partially reflective facet or integrated waveguide. Reverse Bias Operation: The photodiode operates in reverse bias to generate a current proportional to the incident light, enabling real-time monitoring of laser output.

Functional Advantages

Power Stabilization: The photodiode feedback allows the laser driver to adjust current and maintain constant optical output. Safety and Protection: Detects over-power conditions to prevent damage to the laser or downstream components. Compact Integration: Reduces package size and simplifies alignment in optical systems.

Typical ApplicationsPDLD structures are widely used in: Fiber-optic communication systems for stable signal transmission. Optical sensors and measurement devices where precise light monitoring is required. Laser pointers and optical storage devices for feedback-controlled output.

In summary, a PDLD structure integrates a laser diode and a photodiode to provide both light generation and monitoring in a compact, efficient semiconductor device. The design relies on PIN junctions, optical confinement, and careful electrical and optical integration to ensure stable, coherent output and reliable feedback control.
