Method for Establishing a Point Test for Optical Modules LOS

A point test for optical modules (LOS) can be established by measuring the transmitted and received optical power at a single link point using an OLTS or power meter to detect signal loss or absence.

Overview of LOS Testing

Loss of Signal (LOS) testing is used to verify whether an optical module is transmitting and receiving light correctly. It is a critical check for optical transceivers to ensure network reliability and link integrity.

LO

S testing is typically performed at a single point in the network, often at the module interface, to confirm that the module is operational and that the optical signal is present.

Equipment Required

Optical Light Source (OLS) – Provides a stable optical signal at the module's operating wavelength. Optical Power Meter (OPM) – Measures the optical power received at the far end of the link. Optical Loss Test Set (OLTS) – Combines a light source and power meter for precise insertion loss and LOS measurements.

Optional OTD

R – For more detailed analysis of reflections, splices, and connector losses along the fiber, though not strictly required for a point LOS test.

Step-by-

Step Procedure

Prepare the Test SetupConnect the optical module under test to the OLTS or OPM using appropriate patch cords or jumpers. Ensure connectors are clean and properly seated.

Power On the Module

Activate the optical module and allow it to stabilize. Check that the module's transmitter is enabled and the receiver is ready to detect incoming light.

Measure Optical Power

Use the OPM or OLTS to measure the received optical power at the module's output port. Compare the measured power to the module's specified operating range. A reading below the threshold indicates a potential LOS condition.

Verify LOS Status

Many optical modules provide a LOS indicator (LED or digital signal). Confirm that the LOS indicator matches the measured optical power. If the module shows LOS while power is within specification, the module is functioning correctly.

Document Results

Record the measured optical power, wavelength, and LOS status. This documentation is essential for network validation and troubleshooting.

Considerations

Connector and Fiber Quality – Dirty or damaged connectors can cause false LOS readings. Always inspect and clean connectors before testing. Wavelength Matching – Ensure the test source matches the module's operating wavelength (e.g., 850 nm, 1310 nm, 1550 nm).

Temperature and Environmental Conditions – Optical power can vary with temperature; perform tests under standard operating conditions. Compliance with Standards – Follow TIA/EIA or ISO/IEC standards for Tier 1 (OLTS) and Tier 2 (OTDR) testing to ensure consistent results.

Summary

A point test for LOS in optical modules involves connecting a light source and power meter to the module, measuring the received optical power, and comparing it to the module's specifications. This method provides a quick and reliable way to detect signal loss, verify module operation, and ensure network link integrity. For more detailed link characterization, OTDR testing can complement LOS measurements to identify specific loss points along the fiber.
