Dual-fiber optical module pigtail

Dual-fiber optical module pigtails are connected by splicing the bare fiber ends to the incoming fiber using fusion or mechanical splicing, while the pre-terminated connector plugs into the optical module.

Overview of Dual-

Fiber Pigtails

A dual-fiber pigtail consists of two optical fibers bundled together, with factory-terminated connectors on one end and bare fiber ends on the other. The connector end is designed to plug directly into an optical module, such as a transceiver or patch panel, while the bare ends are spliced to the network fiber to create a permanent, low-loss connection. This setup is commonly used in single-mode applications and high-density environments like data centers.

Connection MethodPreparationEnsure the work area is clean and free of dust. Gather tools: fusion splicer, fiber strippers, cleaver, and cleaning supplies. Inspect the dual-fiber pigtail for any damage or contamination.

Fiber Stripping and Cleaving

Strip the protective coating from the bare fiber ends carefully without nicking the glass core. Cleave the fiber ends to produce a flat, smooth surface for splicing.

Splicing

Fusion Splicing: Align the bare fiber ends of the pigtail with the incoming fiber in a fusion splicer. The splicer uses an electric arc to melt and fuse the fibers, creating a continuous optical path with minimal loss and reflectance. Fusion splicing is preferred for permanent, high-performance connections.

Mechanical Splicing: For temporary or quick connections, mechanical splicing can be used. The fibers are aligned in a precision sleeve with index-matching gel. This method is less permanent and typically used for multimode fibers.

Connector Termination

The pre-terminated connector on the dual-fiber pigtail (e.g., LC duplex, SC duplex, MPO) is plugged into the optical module or patch panel port. Ensure proper orientation and secure the connector using the module's locking mechanism.

Testing

After splicing and connection, test the link using an optical power meter or OTDR to verify low insertion loss and minimal back reflection.

Best Practices

Use factory-polished connectors to reduce field termination errors and signal loss. Keep dual-fiber pigtails organized and labeled to avoid misalignment in duplex connections. Protect spliced fibers in a splice tray to prevent bending or damage.

For high-density applications, consider pre-assembled MPO/MTP pigtails for faster deployment. By following these steps, dual-fiber optical module pigtails can be connected efficiently, ensuring reliable, low-loss optical performance in both field and data center environments.
