Sensor Types Used for Testing Optical Fibers

Optical fiber testing employs intrinsic and extrinsic sensors, including fiber Bragg gratings, interferometers, and distributed sensing systems, to measure strain, temperature, pressure, and chemical parameters.

Intrinsic Optical Fiber Sensors

Intrinsic sensors use the fiber itself as the sensing element, detecting changes in its internal optical properties such as intensity, phase, wavelength, or polarization. Common types include: Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBG): These are periodic variations in the refractive index of the fiber core that reflect specific wavelengths. Changes in strain or temperature shift the Bragg wavelength, allowing precise measurement of these parameters.

FB

Gs are widely used in structural health monitoring, aerospace, and industrial applications due to their small size, EMI immunity, and ability to be multiplexed along a single fiber. Raman and Brillouin Scattering Sensors: These exploit inelastic scattering of light to measure distributed temperature and strain along the fiber length, enabling monitoring over kilometers. Interferometric Sensors: Mach–Zehnder, Michelson, and Sagnac interferometers detect phase changes caused by environmental variations, providing high sensitivity for vibration, pressure, and angular velocity measurements.

Extrinsic Optical Fiber Sensors

Extrinsic sensors use the fiber primarily as a light guide, with the sensing interaction occurring outside the fiber. Key examples include: Fabry–Perot Interferometers (EFPI): These measure changes in cavity length caused by pressure, strain, or displacement, with the fiber transmitting the light to and from the sensing element.

Intensity-

Based Sensors: Light intensity variations caused by external modulation are detected, offering simple and cost-effective solutions for certain industrial applications.

Distributed and Multiplexed Sensing

Modern optical fiber testing often employs distributed sensing, where a single fiber measures parameters at multiple points along its length. Techniques like optical time-domain reflectometry (OTDR) and optical frequency-domain reflectometry (OFDR) allow precise localization of strain, temperature, or defects over long distances. Multiplexing enables multiple sensors on a single fiber, enhancing monitoring efficiency in large structures or complex systems.

Applications

Optical fiber sensors are used in: Civil and structural engineering: Monitoring bridges, buildings, and dams for strain and deformation. Aerospace and defense: Structural health monitoring, navigation, and vibration detection. Industrial processes: Pressure, temperature, and chemical sensing in harsh environments.

Biomedical and environmental monitoring: Remote sensing of physiological parameters or environmental conditions. These sensors are valued for their high sensitivity, immunity to electromagnetic interference, small size, and ability to operate in extreme conditions, making them essential tools for testing and monitoring optical fibers and the systems they are integrated into.
