Does the secondary distribution box have sockets

Secondary distribution boxes typically do not have sockets directly; they are designed to feed branch circuits rather than supply power to end-use devices. Function of a Secondary Distribution BoxA secondary distribution box (SDB) receives power from the main distribution box and distributes it to branch circuits, such as floor modules or building-level circuits, often through snap-on extender cables or terminal blocks for custom wiring. It usually handles three-phase power and contains larger circuit breakers, isolating switches, and residual current devices (RCDs) to protect downstream circuits.

Its primary role is to act as a central distribution point rather than a direct connection for appliances.

Why Sockets Are Not Standard

Secondary distribution boxes are not intended for direct connection to electrical equipment. According to standard practice, the final connection to end-use devices is made through tertiary distribution boxes or final outlets, which provide single-phase 220V power and individual circuit protection. This ensures safety by isolating each device and preventing overloads or electrical hazards.

The principle of "one device, one circuit breaker, one residual current device, and one box" strictly prohibits connecting multiple devices or sockets directly to a secondary distribution box.

Exceptions and Considerations

In some temporary or construction setups, a secondary consumer unit (similar to an SDB) may be installed in an outbuilding or shed and can include socket circuits, provided it is fed from a main consumer unit and complies with local wiring regulations, such as BS 7671 in the UK. In these cases, the SDB functions more like a secondary consumer unit, with proper RCD or RCBO protection for safety.

Summary

Standard SD

Bs: Do not have sockets; they feed branch circuits. Tertiary distribution boxes or final outlets: Provide sockets for end-use devices. Temporary setups: Sockets may be added if the installation meets safety regulations and includes proper protection devices.

This design ensures safe, reliable, and compliant power distribution while preventing direct overloading or unsafe connections at the secondary distribution level.
