Fire protection settings for primary distribution boxes

Primary distribution boxes require a combination of fire-resistant enclosures, proper spacing, oil containment, and electrical protection settings to minimize fire risk.

Physical Fire Protection Measures

Enclosure Construction and Fire Resistance Distribution boxes should be installed in fire-resistant rooms or enclosures. High-voltage rooms should meet Class I or II fire-resistant standards, while low-voltage rooms should have at least Level III fire resistance. Enclosures should prevent fire spread through walls, floors, or cable penetrations by using refractory materials to seal openings.

Windows should be protected against water ingress and small animals. Spacing and Layout Maintain adequate spacing between oil-filled equipment such as circuit breakers and voltage transformers. If the total oil volume exceeds 600 kg, equipment should be installed in a separate explosion-proof room.

For smaller oil volumes (over 60 kg), oil storage or containment facilities are recommended. When high- and low-voltage devices share a room, maintain a minimum distance of 1 meter between them.

Ventilation and Fire-

Fighting Equipment Ensure proper ventilation to prevent overheating and equip the distribution room with fire-fighting equipment suitable for electrical fires. Enclosure Protection Ratings Use enclosures with at least IP55 protection to prevent ingress of dust and water. Covers, gaskets, and cable glands should match or exceed the enclosure's IP rating.

Components with varying protection classes should default to the lowest protection rating of the assembly.

Electrical Fire Protection Settings

Overcurrent and Arc Detection Implement overcurrent protection using relays, fuses, or recloser controls to detect and clear faults. For high fire risk areas, consider sensitive ground fault protection and arc-sensing technology (e.g., SEL Arc Sense) to detect arcing faults that may not trigger standard overcurrent devices. Selective Relay Settings Configure relays for fast fault clearance while avoiding nuisance tripping.

Use reclose blocking or fast fuse curves in high-risk conditions to prevent fire propagation. Preventive Operational Measures Conduct regular inspections of distribution poles, insulators, and equipment to identify potential fire hazards. Implement vegetation management and de-energization programs during high fire risk periods to reduce ignition sources.

Standards and GuidanceBS 7671 Chapter 42 provides guidance on electrical provisions against fire, emphasizing precautions in locations with increased fire risk.

Summary

Effective fire protection for primary distribution boxes combines robust physical enclosures, adequate spacing and containment, fire-fighting readiness, and electrical protection settings such as overcurrent and arc detection. Compliance with relevant standards ensures both safety and operational reliability, reducing the risk of fire propagation in electrical distribution systems.
