How is the optical cable situation in Tanzania

Tanzania's National ICT Broadband Backbone (NICTBB) is a nationwide fiber optic network connecting all regions and most districts, with cross-border links to neighboring countries and international submarine cables.

Overview

The National IC

T Broadband Backbone (NICTBB) is Tanzania's primary optical fiber network, managed by the Tanzania Telecommunications Company Ltd (TTCL) on behalf of the government. The network spans approximately 7,910 km to over 18,000 km of fiber-optic cable, linking regional and district headquarters across the country, including all districts in Zanzibar and most districts on the mainland. Its construction is part of a government initiative to enhance digital connectivity, socio-economic development, and regional integration.

Coverage and Expansion

As of 2026, 122 out of 139 district headquarters on the mainland are connected, with the remaining districts scheduled for completion by the end of the year. The network also connects Tanzania to seven neighboring countries—Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Zambia, Malawi, and Mozambique—with plans to extend connectivity to the Democratic Republic of Congo via Lake Tanganyika. This cross-border integration supports regional trade, communication, and digital services.

International Connectivity

The NICTB

B is linked to multiple international submarine cables, including SEACOM, EASSy, and soon 2-AFRICA, providing Tanzania with high-speed internet access and redundancy. A redundancy route through Kenya at the Horohoro border ensures uninterrupted connectivity even if marine landing stations in Dar es Salaam face disruptions. This setup enhances reliability and supports faster, more stable internet services across East and Central Africa.

Technical Standards

The network follows strict optical fiber installation standards, including specifications for attenuation, chromatic dispersion, and polarization mode dispersion. Fiber cables are installed in manholes and handholes with defined spacing to ensure durability and maintainability, supporting long-term operational efficiency.

Socio-

Economic Impact

The NICTBB facilitates e-government, e-learning, e-health, and e-commerce applications, contributing to sustainable socio-economic development. By connecting urban and rural areas, the network improves access to digital services, enhances communication infrastructure, and strengthens Tanzania's role as a regional digital hub. The government emphasizes that this infrastructure underpins development in sectors such as health, education, tourism, and agriculture.

Regional Integration

Through cross-border links and submarine cable connections, Tanzania is increasingly integrated into the East African digital ecosystem. The network supports collaboration with neighboring countries, enhances regional data flow, and positions Tanzania as a key digital gateway for East and Central Africa. In summary, the Tanzania Optical Cable Network (NICTBB) is a strategic national infrastructure project that provides high-speed broadband connectivity across the country, links Tanzania to international submarine cables, and strengthens regional digital integration, supporting both socio-economic development and technological advancement.
