Pipe and Cable Tray Specifications and Dimensions

Cable trays and pipe supports are specified based on material, dimensions, load capacity, environmental resistance, and compliance with international and national standards.

Materials and Coatings

Cable trays are manufactured from a variety of materials depending on environmental conditions and mechanical requirements: Mild Steel (MS): Often used for support structures and GI cable trays; can be hot-dip galvanized or powder-coated for corrosion resistance. Stainless Steel: Types 304, 316, and 316L are used for high corrosion resistance, especially in aggressive environments. Aluminum: Lightweight, corrosion-resistant, and suitable for atmospheric exposure; often used in ventilated or ladder-type trays.

Alu-

Zinc + Magnesium Coating: Provides self-healing properties on cut edges and excellent corrosion resistance. HRCA/CRCA Steel: Hot-rolled or cold-rolled close-annealed steel for structural strength.

Dimensions and Design

Cable trays come in various standard sizes and profiles: Width: Common widths range from 50 mm to 750 mm. Height: Typically 50 mm to 150 mm, depending on load and cable volume. Length: Standard lengths are modular, often 1 m or 2 m sections.

Tray Types: Ladder, perforated, solid-bottom, wire mesh, and channel trays are selected based on cable type, heat dissipation, and electromagnetic interference protection. Rung Spacing: 150–230 mm is recommended for ladder trays to support cables and maintain bend radius.

Load and Mechanical Requirements

Trays must support the weight of cables without deformation. Structural supports are fabricated from MS angles or C-channels, typically spaced at 1 m intervals for wall-mounted or suspended installations. Fasteners such as high-tensile bolts, washers, and nuts (e.g., M8) are used for assembly and joint connections.

Standards and Compliance

International Standards: IEC 61537, NEMA VE1, ISO 1461 for galvanization. National Standards: IS 2062 for HRCA steel, IS 513 for CRCA steel, ASTM A653 for pre-galvanized steel. Certifications: CE marking, UL, IMQ, and LCIE certifications ensure compliance with safety and quality standards.

Galvanization: Hot-dip galvanized trays should have a zinc coating mass of ~395 g/m² and thickness >55 microns.

Installation Guidelines

Supports must be fabricated and installed at specified heights (e.g., 10–12 m for wall-mounted trays) with proper isolation. Cable laying should ensure stress-free connections, maintaining minimum bend radius and proper dressing. Accessories include tees, bends, reducers, vertical bends, and snap-on covers for flexible routing and protection.

H

V and fiber optic cables may require additional conduits (HDPE) and isolation materials for safety.

Documentation and Quality Assurance

Manufacturers must provide material test certificates (MTC), type test certificates, and quality assurance plans (QAP) for review.

G

A drawings with dimensional details and production records are required for technical evaluation. These specifications ensure that cable trays and pipe supports are mechanically robust, corrosion-resistant, and compliant with safety standards, suitable for industrial, commercial, and high-voltage installations.
